Grey Sloan Memorial's heart of doctors, 'The Seattle Grace Five' include the much loved Meredith Grey, Derek Shepherd, Mark Sloan, Arizona Robbins, and of course, the beloved Christina Yang. The medical drama has won people over with its doctors and their lives and it won't be wrong to say, to date, Yang has proved to be the most promising surgeon. She worked super hard to improve herself and stayed at the top of her class throughout med school, despite being dyslexic.
Throughout the ten seasons of Yang's journey, time and again, she has been portrayed as a true surgeon who'll go the extra mile to make themselves better. Christina Yang was born to be a surgeon. A cardiothoracic surgeon. She solely belonged in the OR, and she said this aloud a lot many times in the show! Watching her learn and become a fine surgeon has truly been a delight for all the viewers.
Yang has been the epitome of determination and utmost competitive zeal to learn. Going through various traumatic experiences like the hospital shooting, the infamous plane crash, going through a conflict of interest with Owen, and even having severe PTSD, she did not stop working hard. One of my favorite parts of the show included her having Dr. Teddy Altman as a mentor. That was a heart-touching moment indeed. Words can't do justice to Christina Yang's mettle.
Meredith and Christina's friendship has been a central part of the show. In her final season of the show, Christina immersed herself into printing 3D conduits for hearts and eventually managed to succeed and get the limelight that her work deserved by getting nominated for the coveted Harper Avery Award. Her trial was the face of medicine and she did not settle there. The show depicted a lot of drama around her Harper Avery nomination and it broke the viewer's hearts when she lost her award to hospital politics! Even though she received the votes to win the Harper Avery, she did not receive it because Grey Sloan Memorial was partially owned by the Harper Avery Foundation.
Richard Webber actively advocated for Yang at the cost of his relationship with his wife, Catherine Fox-Avery, thus paving the way for Grey Sloan's doctors to win the award in the future and Meredith Grey did manage to go ahead and get the award in season 14.
''Have some fire. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature. Be better than anyone here, and don't give a damn what anyone thinks. You're on your own. Be on your own."
-Christina Yang
Christina Yang proved to the world that an award couldn't stop her from being a fine surgeon. Her work did gather attention, even from Dr. Burke who handed over his position of Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at a research center in Switzerland. Yang's exit from the show brought her journey to a full circle. She achieved everything she wanted in life. Being able to run an exclusive cardiothoracic research center and changing the face of medicine. In my personal opinion, there isn't any surgeon at Grey Sloan even eight seasons later, who can match her level of determination and skill.
Every medical student has taken inspiration from Grey Sloan's doctors and Christina Yang is in every medico's hearts, pumping motivation, quite literally! Her life's work ultimately paid off and she's a pure delight to watch on screen. Her last words to Meredith Grey surely have everyone's heart, "I gotta go. You stay here. You are a gifted surgeon with an extraordinary mind. Don't let what he wants eclipse what you need. He's very dreamy, but he's not the sun. YOU are."
