Movies and TV Shows about sex education


Sex positivity has come a long way on TV over the years. The previously taboo subject has come to inspire plenty of great TV shows and movies, from Sex and the City to Netflix's Sex Education. Rather than shying away from hard questions or occasionally uncomfortable subject matter, these sex-positive shows and movies adopt a progressive and tolerant approach to sexuality, which often lack in real life situations.


Sex Education

It should come as no surprise that this is a Netflix hit.The show is a sum total of every single topic under sex positivity. Dealing in gender, sexual orientation, abortion, sexual assault, racial stereotyping, mental health—this show endearingly explores it all. The UK series is set in the fictional town of Moordale and revolves around a teen named Otis (Asa Butterfield) who starts a makeshift sex therapy practice, taking after his mum Jean (Gillian Anderson), a real sex therapist. It is definitely a must watch!


Big Mouth

Netflix’s latest animated series, Big Mouth, taps into the awkwardness of childhood, warts and all. It explored the lives of Andrew, Jessie and Nick as they navigate the wonders and horrors of puberty. Not only does Big Mouth normalize talking about sex, bodies and everything in between, it also approaches it in a totally light-hearted way. The cartoon is so good at tackling everything from consent to masturbation that sexual health educators are among its fans.


Tuca and Bertie

This animated comedy series is about the friendship between two 30-year-old anthropomorphic bird women who live in the same apartment building—Tuca , a cocky, care-free toucan, and Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird. The sex-positive series makes leaps and bounds for females in the way it shows characters navigating their way through STIs, dating, their bodies and naturally—pubic hair. It is unafraid to shy away from important issues with pisodes tackling everything from sexual harassment to anxiety.


Lust Stories

With four micro tales of lust explored through its 4 female protagonists - Kalinidi, Sudha, Reena and Megha- Lust Stories opens up a dialogue about female desires that isn't a subject which has been dealt with in Indian films. Lust Stories explores female sexuality in a more tasteful, yet realistic way. tackles the issues of arranged marriage, women’s domestic roles in India, classism and a power dynamics in sexual relationships, and sex in marriage (and outside of it).


Christiane Amanpour: Sex & Love Around The World

In this educational series, distinguished journalist Christiane Amanpour sets out on a trip around the world to discover and illuminate how sexual relations, intimacy, and partnerships are changing in our ever-changing world. From plural marriage in Ghana to trans identity in India and divorce in Lebanon, this fascinating documentary sets gender, sex and relationships on a global stage, while taking a more journalistic approach to sex education.


Easy

The show is an anthropology comedy that focuses on a different Chicago couple or character in each episode and explores the struggles they face while trying to find love and happiness in a modern world. The show covers a wide range of relationships and tackles subject's like open marriage, lesbian relationships, couples with partners of advanced age, couples with partners who keep their body hair intact, middle-aged dating, and more.


Wanderlust

Wanderlust explores sexual escapades and misadventures from the point of view of adults. It follows psychoanalytic therapist Joy and her husband Alan as the two embark on the awkwar journey of an open marriage. The show explores the multitude of reasons people have sex and the things they get out of it. It tackles questions on how to rekindle the passion in a stagnant relationship, the path to a polyamorous relationship, and the physical struggles of an aging body.


Sex, Explained

A spin-off of the Explained web series, Sex, Explained is a five-episodes-long mini docuseries that attempts to explain various nuances of sex. The easily digestible, approximately 20-minute episodes, bursting with colorful animations and engaging interviews, cover basic information about subjects like fertility, birth control, and attraction. The show very successfully educates viewers about many different aspects of sex, things that are either left out of or glossed over in the sex education many receive at school.
